Trumbull's Flag

  Trumbull's Centennial Celebration - 1897
This century old photo was taken of Long Hill Green during Trumbull's Centennial celebration. The American flag in the background appears to be a 35 star US Civil War vintage flag when zoomed in on. The proper number of stars for 1897 would have been 45, but a vintage Civil War flag if in good enough condition would have been proudly flown in any northern town celebrating its founding. The large flag in the foreground is a variation of the "United States Standard" flag that was commonly displayed during this period.

Trumbull National Guard
This 1868 photograph shows the Trumbull National Guard Unit, Company C, 8th Regiment of the Connecticut National Guard. For awhile after the Civil War, the Town of Trumbull held an event each year known as "Training Day" that featured a parade and display of military drills. Established in 1866, the Trumbull National Guard disbanded at the end of 1871.

Another picture of the Trumbull National Guard in 1867 posed in front of a grist mill that was originally established by Gideon and Ephriam Hawley in 1722. The regiment was commanded by Captain Charles E. Plumb.

War Games on Long Hill Green
In 1909, the US Army set up a temporary camp for "Blue and Gray" war games alongside Long Hill Green on the property where the Mase Building stands today (formerly Davey Bros.).

World War I Monument Dedication
On a rainy day in 1926, a new monument (that replaced an earlier wooden one) recognizing Trumbull's WW1 veterans was dedicated at the Southern end of Long Hill Green. The monument consists of a large native Trumbull stone with an inlaid bronze plaque engraved with the names of Trumbull's men who served in this war.

Early Postal Delivery
Trumbull's first postmaster was Eliakim Beach, who was also served as the first town clerk. The town's first post office was located in his tavern on Daniels Farm Road.

The Milk Wagon
In its early years, Trumbull was mostly a farming community. Although the town had its share of small factories during the period of the industrial revolution, most people in Trumbull were farmers until early in this century. Milk was one of Trumbull's biggest commodities back then. In this picture, Mr. Fuller poses with his horse and milk wagon on White Plains Road.

The Hubbell Hadley Windmill
One hundred years ago, this windmill was used by the Hubbell Hadley shirt factory located on Main Street near the corner of Stonehouse Road. The windmill was used to supply the factory with water that was pumped from an aquifer. In later years, the Harvey Hubbell family added the barn and greenhouse also pictured here. The windmill continued to stand after the shirt factory was torn down and Saint Joseph's Manor for the aged was built. However, in the 1970's the windmill was finally torn down because it had fallen into a state of disrepair.

The Windmill and Manor
This 1960 aerial view of St. Joseph's Manor shows the Hubbell Hadley windmill when it stood next to the Catholic Dioceses of Bridgeport's home for the aged.

The Old Long Hill Firehouse
The old firehouse on Meadow Road was built in 1920. Today the building is leased by the YMCA for various activities, such as aerobics, but is still owned by Trumbull's volunteer fire department. At times the old firehouse has been used as a dance hall, duck pin bowling alley and nursery school.

The Helen Plumb Building
Recently renovated, the Helen Plumb Building on Church Hill Road was Trumbull's second Town Hall. The first Town Hall, formerly known as Beach's Tavern, was purchased by the Town of Trumbull in 1862. This Town Hall was located on Daniels Farm Road. In 1883 the old Beach's Tavern Mansion was replaced by a new Town Hall (The Helen Plumb Building). This building served as the Town Hall until 1957 when it was replaced by the current one.

The Trumbull Health Center
For many years after the Town Hall was relocated to its current site the older building was used as the home of the "Public Health Nursing Association."

Korvetts Store - Trumbull Shopping Park
Who remembers Korvetts? Has Trumbull Shopping Park ever had a store that replaced this one for the variety of products it offered?

The Long Hill Food Mart
Once located at the corner of Lake Avenue and Main Street. The Long Hill Food Mart building was at one time a Methodist church, a bus company, and an auto garage. In 1969 it was torn down to make way for a new modern gas station.
